John 1:1-5 The Voice Translation
“Before time itself was measured, the Voice was speaking. The Voice was and is God. This celestial Word remained ever present with the Creator; His speech shaped an entire cosmos. Immersed in the practice of creating, all things that exist were birthed in Him.
His breath filled all things with a living, breathing light — a light that thrives in the depths of darkness, blazes through murky bottoms. It cannot and will not be quenched.”
This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It paints a magnificent, inspiring picture of the beauty and power of our God. The King and Creator who was immersed in the practice of creating, could also create a living, breathing light that thrives in darkness, blazes through murky bottoms and can never be quenched.
Creating Light in the Darkest Time
I have never thought of light as a living, breathing thing. Yet, it is. When I have gone through the darkest times in my life, times in which darkness was all around, I was still aware of light no matter how far away. It was there, living and breathing, and I knew I would draw closer and closer to it. No matter how terrible my circumstances were, they could not quench that light. It is a light that brings comfort and breathes itself into our dark souls. It blazes through to the depths of our being. No depth or darkness can stop it.
Only one thing can stop it from permeating each of us to fullest depth – our decision to reject it. Our rejection does not diminish it in any way. We hurt ourselves by refusing the very thing that can break the power of the murky depths. But, we can never lessen its power in this world in any way – only within ourselves.
We, in His Image, Love to Create – Create Light
Our God knows everything about creating. He is creation; He is the Creator. And we, in His image, love to create. I believe He loves what we create. For Him, there is no contest involved. We can never match what He is able to create. He doesn’t care about that because His creation – us – was a labor of love! When our children are small, we take great joy in their drawings, notes, stick figures and whatever else they may bring us. We place them on the refrigerator or other prominent places, as we enjoy and encourage their creativity. God does the same.
Creating Light – a Living, Breathing Being – Expands and Grows
Everything is filled with the precious, amazing, powerful light He created for us. I think that we paint, write, and do a thousand hobbies to expand the light. We take care of this earth to release more light. Whether it is done to honor God or not, the light — a living, breathing being — expands and grows. When it is done to honor God, He rejoices and our joy is made full in Him.
God’s words, His Voice, created an entire Cosmos! I really cannot comprehend all that this includes. I do comprehend the fact that our voice, the image of His voice, has power – power to create. We have a two-fold power. We can speak light and life into ourselves and our cosmos – ourselves and those around us. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. James speaks about it at length. Our tongue (words) can also create darkness and destruction. “The tongue is a blazing fire seeking to ignite an entire world of vices; it is capable of corrupting the whole body; it ignites and consumes the course of creation with a fuel the originates in hell itself.” That is rather scary!
Train Your Tongue to Create Light
James goes on to say that we are able to tame many things, just not our own tongue. Then he says, “Ironically, the same tongue can be both an instrument of blessing to our Lord and Father, and a weapon that hurls curses upon others who are created in God’s own image.” James 3:9 The Voice
Take some time to meditate on the living, breathing light, the power to create, and the power of the tongue. God has presented us with a challenge – will we speak and create as He does or will we speak corruption, using the fuel of hell to consume the course of creation? Those of you reading this blog all want to speak and create as He does. Yet, all around us, the opposite also takes place.
Here is the takeaway – light overcomes darkness and God’s Word is that His light cannot and will not be quenched! No matter what is happening around us, we hold the greater power if we choose to. We can speak light. We can create light. Even though my light may seem so tiny and insignificant, but it isn’t because it joins in with God’s light and from there, no force can stop it. That’s our superpower! Every one of us is a superhero clad in a cape of light.
